In this step by step guide you will learn how to get a Texas License to carry. The Texas license to carry is also know as a Texas LTC, Texas CHL, concealed handgun license and other names but the official name is a Texas license to carry or LTC for short.
This guide will take you step by step and make getting your Texas LTC as easy as possible.
License to Carry Class
The first step in getting your Texas license to carry is to take the state approved LTC class. This class is taught be instructors that are certified by the Texas Department of Public Safety. You can take this class in person or online.
In Person LTC Class
The in person LTC class is 4 to 6 hours plus range making the total class time 6 to 7 hours long. It consists of the classroom portion and the range portion. The in person class is taught by LTC instructors that are certified by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
You can find a DPS certified LTC instructor in your area by using the LTC instructor locator at Point Blank CHL. Their instructor locator includes instructors from all across Texas.
Online LTC Class
The online Texas LTC class is the most popular way to take the class, it’s available 24/7 and is a self paced class that you take from the comfort of your home.
The online class is provided by Texas DPS approved online LTC course providers. One of the best approved online course providers is Texas Carry Academy. They are approved statewide by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
LTC Application
The second step is to submit your application for the license to carry. The application is submitted online on the DPS website. After you submit your online application, DPS will email you instructions on how to schedule your fingerprint appointment. Do not upload your LTC104 until the shooting portion section is filled out.
Fingerprint Appointment
The third step is to schedule and complete your fingerprint appointment. The fingerprints for the Texas LTC are taken digitally by Identogo. Once your prints are taken, Identogo will send them to the DPS for you.
When scheduling your fingerprint appointment with Identogo, you will need to provide them with the service code number: 119Q91
Shooting Portion
The fourth step is the shooting portion. This step can also be done anytime after you complete the online course. To complete the shooting portion you locate an LTC instructor using the locator on Point Blank CHL’s website.
Make sure you bring a copy of your LTC104 certificate of training to the instructor doing the shooting portion. They will need to fill out the shooting portion of the LTC 104. Once this is complete, you can upload your LTC104 on the DPS website.
Issuance of License
Once you submit your LTC application and complete the required steps, DPS has 60 days to issue your license. If there are any problems with your application they will notify you via mail. If you have not received your license in 60 days, you can call the DPS handgun license division at: 1-512-424-7293.
